Spring is Here! 7 Joyful Tips to Celebrate the Season

As soon as the days get longer and the air starts to warm up, something magical happens — my dog knows. There’s a spring in her step (pun intended), and daily routines start to shift in all the best ways. Over the years, I’ve noticed certain little rituals that have become staples in our springtime life together. Whether you’ve got a dog, a cat, or another beloved furry friend, here are seven spring-inspired routines that my pet absolutely loves — and maybe yours will too!

Morning Sunbathing Sessions

There’s nothing like that first patch of sunshine spilling through the window on a cool spring morning. My dog will find the warmest spot on the floor and stretch out like royalty. Spring mornings are perfect, and the fresh air seems to energize them. Try cracking a window or letting them out early for a dose of Vitamin D and a gentle start to the day.

Sniff Walks with Extra Time

Spring is the season of smells. Flowers blooming, grass growing, and yes, the occasional mud puddle all combines to create the ultimate sensory experience for pets. We call them “sniff walks” — slower-paced walks where my dog can stop and take in all the new scents. It might not be the fastest stroll, but it’s enriching and mentally stimulating. Give them that time to explore; it’s like reading the morning paper for them.

Backyard Zoomies

Once the yard starts turning green again, the zoomies return in full force. Something about soft grass and a light breeze brings out the wild child in my dog. If you’ve got a backyard or a safe open space, let them run freely (or even set up a little obstacle course!). Spring is a great time to encourage more physical activity, especially after a sedentary winter.

Bird Watching from the Window

When I had my cat, this was one of her favorite things to do. As birds return and bugs start buzzing, the view from the window gets very exciting. I had set up a perch near a window and hung a bird feeder just outside for extra entertainment. It’s mental stimulation that keeps them happy and helps curb boredom-induced mischief. Bonus: it’s super cute to watch their little “chatter” noises when they spot something fun!

Seasonal Treat Time

Just like we might enjoy more fresh fruits and veggies in spring, I like to switch up my dog treats this time of year too. I’ll make frozen dog treats with strawberries, blueberries and banana in plain yogurt, put in ice trays and freeze. Or maybe some frozen carrot sticks. It’s a fun way to celebrate the change in season — and they absolutely look forward to it. Just be sure anything you give is pet-safe!

Spring Cleaning.....With Their Help!

Okay, maybe “help” is a stretch. But every Spring, as I deep clean the house, my dog is right there sniffing every box, rediscovering old toys, and “supervising” the entire operation. I also use this time to wash pet beds, organize her stuff, wash her blankets, and get rid of any toys or chew bones that are past their prime. It’s like a little refresh for them too, and they always seem energized by the change.

Longer Evenings, Longer Playtime

With more daylight comes more time for evening play, and pets know it. Whether it’s a game of fetch in the yard with your dog, or a laser pointer session around the living room with your cat, we make the most of the extended daylight hours. I’ve found that even an extra 10 minutes of play in the evening helps my dog wind down happier and sleep better — and honestly, it’s great for me too!

Spring is a fresh start — for us and for our pets. These little rituals help us reconnect with nature, enjoy simple pleasures, and make new memories together. What are your pet’s favorite springtime habits? I’d love to hear how you celebrate the season with your furry companion!
